Manual Labour
Work done by hand e.g. by a Farmer or Bricklayer

Migrant
A traveller who moves from one region or country to another

Part-time
Employee works less than the whole time appropriate to a particular jobs, usually between 10 and 30 hours

A distinguishing characteristic that a person possesses

Professional
An expert who earns a living from a certain profession e.g. Architect or Doctor

Recession (Economic Downturn)
A general slowdown in economic activity over a sustained period of time

Salary
Fixed regular payment made by an employer to an employee, usually monthly

Self-Employed
Person who works for themselves as opposed to working for an employer e.g. Farmer, GP or Plumber

Skill
The ability to do a particular task that comes from training, practice or natural ability

Skills Gap/Shortage
Where there is a need for a particular skill in a job or industry but there are no employees with the right skills to fill it

Sole Trader
An individual who runs their own business, where there is no legal separations between the business and the individual in terms of finance

Supervisor
A person with the official task of overseeing the work of a person, group, performance and/or operation

Technician
A person whose job involves training in a particular technical process e.g. Dental Technician or Vehicle Maintenance Technician

When schools, colleges and universities and not during holidays

Transferable Skills
Skills developed through experience which can be used in any workplace

Trend
A general direction in which something tends to move

Unitary Authority
A town or city that functions independently of county administration and is responsible for all local government functions within its area

Unskilled
No special skills or training

Work Based Learning
Learning that is based wholly or mainly in a work setting e.g. on a Construction site or in a Hairdressing salon

Between 16 and 65
